...is a bad movie.

I think everyone can pretty much agree.

Is it the worst movie ever? Nope. It is somewhat fashionable to bash and sometimes that takes away from honest critique.

My two questions are:

1. What actually makes this a bad movie?
2. Where does this movie place in the B movie canon? Name a film that is slightly worse, and one that is slightly better.

I can only answer question #1. Battlefield Earth was immediately a bad idea for a movie being based on a bad novel to begin with. As bad as people thought the film was, BE was the kind of book you deserve a medal for if you manage to soldier through it. I know I never made it past 120 pages, and even that's too much!

The film was thus bad having a bad script based on a bad book.

I just thought up an answer to #2: it doesn't fit into B-movie cannon. The budget was far too high.

By your thinking any film by Uwe Boll (which have relatively high budgets) wouldn't fit into B-Moviedom. To me, Uwe Boll is the Ed Wood of our day.

I bow my head in shame, but I don't know Uwe Boll. Did this director ever make a film with over $100 million though?

$100 million probably not. $10s of millions, probably.

He has made a career recently of destroying video game licensed movies. If I gave my 3 year old a camera and a script, he could shoot a better movie.

'House of the Dead' is an exercise in mediocrity. 'Undead' was shot for much less, and is infinitely superior. Not to mention a running Torgo reference.

Actually, I LIKED battlefield Earth, but I know I'm in the vast minority there.

I'm clearly a mutant. I've read the book twice and seen the movie a couple of times. It's silly and there are some very goofy parts, but (shrug) it's okay.

I once joined a crew to MS3TK that movie.

Now, as far as soldiering, I will admit that I also read all of Mission: Earth. that was rough, but I wanted to see if it was any good. It wasn't. But there were a couple of tiny interesting thiings from it.

I draw the line at Scientology, though. Can't go there. Sorry.

    To answer my own question:

    1. Moon Boots, Aliens on oxygen tanks, tongues, dreadlocks, and the lazy eye.
    2. BE > Jaws of Satan. BE < Super Mario Bros.

      1. screenwriting, script, and dreadlocks
      2. better than universal soldier 2(brothers in arms)
not quite as good as the phenomenon

    1. dialog, editing, cinematography (or a collective lack-thereof)
    2. has a lively following among drinking game afficionados
    > Cherry 2000
    < Cujo

Battlefield Earth merits its place at the bottom of my list because of three factors:

The poor quality of just about every aspect of it, from concept to dialogue to character "development" to costuming and make-up

The ratio of budget v/s quality (which is why it doesn't merit the Ed Wood excuse)

The hubris of John Travolta--the lamest, ugliest cult shill I've ever seen

I'm willing to extend a lot of credit to movies that make do with little resources. Heck--some of my favorite films were made for less than the percentage of BE's budget spent on Lee Press-on Dreads. But when a film spends a butt-load of money just to come up with something as crappy as BE--AND they have the messianic tie-in with El Ron Huckster--they deserve all of my scorn. They've got it.

Wait a minute, I liked Cherry 2000, It's no Death Race 2000 but Melanie Griffith is kinda hot. At least it's corny, BE is just bizarre. Travolta just seems like he's drunk through the whole movie.

I too enjoyed the movie, that isn't to say that it wasn't a badly made movie... it's just that my willful suspension of disbelief is so powerful that i can sit through nearly any bad movie ever made and find some enjoyable part of it.....
