The hero is a pudgy, peacock pimp past his prime!
The fight scenes consist of girlishly slapping in the direction of your opponent, and karate kicks in his general direction!
The sex scenes consist mostly of mutual jiggling of cellulite!
But oh, the red and blue velour, the fabulous '70s outfits, the proto-rapping and the actually rather good scene of Congolese dancers.
It's a pretty amazing watch, and I really wonder what it was like to see it for the first time in the '70s.

Re: Dolemite
Mon, September 27, 2004 - 6:41 PMRudy Ray Moore aka Dolemite was one of the godfathers of blue urban stand-up comedy in the early to mid 70's. Sort of a younger, pimper version of Redd Foxx. Dolemite was his most famous role and his performing nickname as well. Personally I always preferred his film Avenging Disco Godfather myself. As it's even worse. -

Wed, September 29, 2004 - 12:32 AMThe sequel, "The Human Tornado", is even better, but "Petey Wheatstraw, The Devil's Son-In-Law" is hands down the most surreal of all RR Moore's movies. It's like a WC Fields movie set in the ghetto.

Sun, November 28, 2004 - 4:26 PMOh my goodness!!
Just saw Petey Wheatstraw. Words cannot describe. I think it's the most surreal movie I've ever seen. Makes Pink Flamingos look like Merchant-Ivory.
There's a certain demented genius to it all--the lavish dwelling on details, many of which you'd rather not think about. And oh my my, the bad jokes and worse kung fu!
This has just rocketed to the top of the list of favorite bad movie ever. -

Re: Dolemite
Mon, November 29, 2004 - 5:37 PMIt's as if Rudy fed two ghetto stoners much potent shit, asked them their fantasy movie, taped their dialog and filmed the transcript. Un-fucking-real. If WC Fields' "The Bank Dick" is a classic of American humor (and it's generally considered so) then so is "Petey Wheatstraw."
I very much doubt the people responsible were trying to be serious...
