Okay, I guess I got into it a bit last night with my editor.

We were talking about Raiders of the Lost Ark and he said what a great effect that was when Major Toht's head melts at the end. I countered that this kind of stop-motion effect was old hat to us fans of the Ancient Horror Movies of Yore. He's under the impression that this was some sort of new revolutionary technique (hello -- George Pal? Ray Harryhausen?) and it had never ben done.

So, help me out here, brothers and sisters -- where can I find some examples of this same kind of stop-motion melty effect in our favorite old B movies from Way Back?

  • I've never seen Raiders (sorry, not a fan of Mr. Spielberg, Lucas etc.). But you should definately see the Incredible Melting Man, The Devil's Rain and The Beyond for all 3 have juicy, gross melting effects that look a lot more convincing then stop motion. In fact , the first two films mentioned here are the granddaddies of cinematic ooze.
    • Ah, I will look for those. I think NetFlix has 'em.

And Raiders, at least, was quite fun. I doubt you'll regret those ninety minutes.
      • Rats. All they have is The Devil's Rain. So, I'll look at that and then hunt down the others.
        • there's a movie called THE TERROR from the early 60's with jack nickolson of all people.they sould have called it THE TERRIBLE instead, one of those with lots of dramatic shots of nothing happening (is that considered symbolist?). soldier guy runs away from having fighting in napoleans army, ends up on beach with no shirt in stylish buckeneer boots.rides down the beach on his horse and..dit da dit da dit...anyhew....then the chick in the castle who he's all hot for turns out to be a witch and melts.the end....
as i recall they did it in real time and used wax
  • The melting wax sculpture method is what you are talking about and it is really old, and predates color movies.

Many of the vampire movies in general use that technique, also a movie called Blood Rain, if I remember right. There are too many to mention, as others have said, it is standard fare in the genre.

It was also used in at least one episode of the original star trek.

Tom Savini has a great discussion about the technique and walk through in one of his books.

By the way, in The Terror, the hot chick was not a witch, she was the victim of a witch out for revenge. She was a real girl posessed by the spirit of another woman who had died a long time prior.
